Wisdom teeth (also known as third molars) are the teeth that develop in the very back of the mouth. These teeth typically erupt, or break the surface of the gums, in young people between the ages of 13 and 20.
Sometimes, wisdom teeth are impacted. That means there is no room for them to break through the gum tissue. This typically happens when the mouth (or jaw) is too small to accommodate the teeth.
Impacted wisdom teeth can damage other teeth or develop cysts or tumors around them. Swelling or infection of the gum flap above an impacted wisdom can also cause pain and requires treatment by a dentist. Your dentist or orthodontist may recommend removal of these teeth to prevent future problems.
Wisdom tooth removal does not disturb orthodontic treatment in any way. They can be removed before, during or after braces.
